Storms hit the Midwest and South by :Marcella Marquez

A total of 12 people have been reported dead, and more than 150 have been reported injured after violent storms hit states from Kansas to Kentucky. 3 of the fatalities occurred in Tennessee, 6 occurred in Illinois, and 3 occurred in Missouri. Kansas seems to be the first place were the storm hit, “Kansas was hit Tuesday night, and Gov. Sam Brownback declared a state of emergency for the tiny town of Harveyville, about 20 miles southwest of Topeka (cnn.com)” It was also reported that Pittsburg, Kansas, “experienced straight-line winds up to 120 mph Tuesday, creating a one-mile path of damage (cnn.com)” Most of the damaged happened in Harrisburg, Illinois were 100 people were injured. Illinois was hit with an EF4 tornado “the second most powerful on the scale (cnn.com)” that had winds of 170 mph. One of the buildings in Illinois that was severely damages was, the Harrisburg Medical Center.  A large portion of the roof came of along with 80 feet of exterior wall.  Although it is safe to say the storm system caused damage everywhere it hit. Roofs came off, power lines came down, and mobile homes were tossed, in many cities blocks of building were turned into rubble. According to CNN’s meteorologist, Sean Morris, the storms began because of the mix of cold Canadian air with warm air from the Gulf of Mexico.
